Rotunda of St. Prokop in Strzelno - the largest Roman temple in Poland built on a circular plan. The record in the chronicles of Jan DÅ‚ugosz gives the date March 16, 1133 as the day of its consecration. Recent archival research indicates the simultaneous completion of the rotunda and the nearby Norbertine church (the second decade of the 13th century).
During the reconstruction at the end of the fifteenth or the beginning of the 16th century, the upper part of the tower was demolished and bricked again in the brick and a brick escarpment was added to it from the west. Later, the rotunda ceased to fulfill cult functions and was incorporated into the buildings of the Norbertine monastery as a monastery port. The sacral character of the building was restored in the eighteenth century. During the consecration, ca. 1779, the call of the temple of Saint. Cross on Saint. Prokop. In 1812 the church was profaned by Napoleonic soldiers, it was probably used for economic purposes; then other modifications were made, including the apse was pulled down from the north and a four-sided storey was added to the tower.
In 1892, the first preservation of the church was carried out, at this time apses were reconstructed from the north and a part of Romanesque windows. Another church conservation was carried out in the years 1924-1925, trying to adapt the interior to the needs of worship. During the Second World War the rotunda was turned into a warehouse. In 1945, Germany put explosives in the rotunda. Explosions and fires destroyed the upper parts of the tower and all the interior furnishings, while the walls survived. Reconstruction, begun in the 1950s, lasted until the beginning of this century. The closing of the tower's ceiling was mounted during the reconstruction of the biforium supported on the original Romanesque column of unknown origin. Elements of the decor include: casting of the fund tympanum (from the original, after the fire in 1945, only the head of Christ survived), a 12th century stoup made of one stone, a Roman tomb, five lime cross stations from the 17th century carved in linden wood, bas-relief depictions of Saint. Onufry and Saint Mary of the Egyptians from the 16th century.
