TEUTONIC CASTLE IN GNIEW
LOCALIZATION ON THE MAP
Teutonic castle on the square plan. Built at the end of the 13th century and in the first half of the 14th century, it was the most powerful fortress of the order on the left bank of the Vistula, it was the residence of a commander. During the partitions, he repeatedly changed his function, serving for a granary (rebuilt in the 18th century for this purpose) and a prison. Reconstructed after the mid-nineteenth century, then a large four-sided tower was demolished in the eastern corner and replaced with a turret. It burned down in a fire in 1921. The reconstruction of the monument began in 1968-1974, and its sponsor was the Ship Mechanics Plant "FAMA". The second stage of reconstruction began in 1992 on the initiative of the City and Commune Office. Today, the castle is teeming with life - there are knights' tournaments, artistic blacksmith's exhibitions, summer camps (Summer Magic School) and other events.
