THE RUINS OF OLSZTYN CASTLE

The castle in Olsztyn was established on the rocks already in the second half of the 13th century, as one of the elements of the defense system of Malopolska from the Silesian side. Kazimierz Wielki greatly expanded it. As the castle perfectly fulfilled the task entrusted to him, the Jagiellonians also cared for its good condition - they even established a starosty. Catastrophic for the fortress - as well as for the whole of Poland - turned out to be a Swedish deluge from the mid-seventeenth century and later the northern war. The plundered fortress has not returned to the state of its glory. In the early 18th century, the castle was used to build a nearby church. Rzeczpospolita collapsed and the fortress collapsed.

Today the castle is the backdrop to many cultural events, including knights' tournaments. It is managed by the Land Foundation of Olsztyn. Admission to its walls is payable. In addition to the castle, in Olsztyn it is worth seeing the church. John the Baptist and the moving crib of Jan Wewióra. At the foot of the castle in 2007 reconstructed moved from the Borowna, 18th century wooden manor house granary, which now houses a stylish restaurant. Near Olsztyn there are beautiful nature reserves, protecting the characteristic features of the Jurassic landscape.
