THE SETTLEMENT ON BIRÓW MOUNT

Comprehensive archaeological research was conducted in the area of the Birów Mountain in the 1990s. They allowed to separate five historical and cultural periods in the history of the settlement. The oldest settlements were located here at the end of the Neolithic Age and at the beginning of the Bronze Age (although the dates are also dated to the Palaeolithic). Further traces of the Lusatian culture of the Lusatian period (VI-V in p.n.e.).

A number of artefacts found here have made it possible to say that the hill was also inhabited in the Late Romanesque period - from the turn of the 2nd to the 3rd century. Birów was also a settlement site during the early Middle Ages (IX-X.) And the Middle Ages (XIII-XIV .).

Findings from so many epochs, representing many cultures, allow to rank this archaeological site to the most valuable on the Cracow-Czestochowa Upland. Against the backdrop of the reconstructed history of the settlement, it is clear that its distinct development occurred in the days of Lusatian culture.

There are traces of houses in the form of pits, as well as plates, scoops, axes, or even egg-shaped vessels, which could be so-called. folded before the erection of the house (the tradition preceding the later foundation of the stone). Some of the findings may indicate that the settlement fell prey to the Scythians.

Medieval times brought the construction of the fortifications at the top of the hill, which, complementing the natural walls formed by the rocky hills, took the form of a shaft of stone-wood-clay structure, and in the form of a stone wall.

There were also traces of a large wooden structure. The castle was burnt down in the first half of the 14th century, probably related to the struggles between Władysław Łokietek and the Czech king, Waclaw II (it was found here during the excavations of the Prague silver penny Waclaw). At present there is a reconstruction of a fortification, which was erected in 2008. The rocky hill is popular with climbers, and has a complex of difficult climbing roads, equipped with constant assurance.
